Can I Generate My Own Electricity with a Wind Turbine?

There are about thirty manufacturers of wind turbines with widely varying sizes, reliability histories and prices. Choosing the right one can be very important.

Now that 36 states have adopted "net metering legislation," we are finally on our way to energy independence using the wind's "free energy". What this does is allow us to generate our own electricity (with a wind turbine) and trade electricity with the utility watt for watt. This also affords us the reliability of being tied to the electrical grid, yet protecting us from rising electricity rates.

If you have a good wind resource, wind projects can provide the best return on your investment of all the renewable energy resources available. But even wind turbines are expensive and the wind velocity can make a big difference in the economics of the project. So its important to review the economics and know what incentives are available. Who are the Manufacturers?

The wind turbine industry is a mature industry. Large wind farms have been installed from California to Pennsylvania and places in between. Smaller turbines have been installed all over the country as well. For the small installation, most of the wind turbine manufacturers will work directly with the client to supply and to some extent support the self-installation of a wind turbine. Others will put you in contact with a qualified dealer to turnkey (ready-to-operate) the installation. This may be one of the considerations that need to be addressed when making the decision about the choice of turbine.
